I was having a little too much fun in the snow a few weeks ago and I hopped a curb in a parking lot when I got a little overzealous. The result is a terribly bent mid-pipe in my exhaust.
The exhaust took the punishment though, which is probably a good thing because one of the other possible victims of my incident was my differential casing! The exhaust is bent so badly that some part of it is constantly making contact with the body of the car, making terrible vibration sounds inside the car and annoying the HELL out of me. And the exhaust simply doesn’t sound right with a dent in the pipe.
I’ve gotten underneath, tried to bang it with a hammer and tried to use different exhaust hangers, but the pipe is always rattling against the car somehow. It’s driving me crazy. Not just a little crazy. Like The Shining crazy. So I bought the cheapest exhaust I find... on the aftermarket, of course!
It’s a Cobalt exhaust. It’s on the cheaper side but a 5 year warranty sounds good to me. The soundbites on youtube sound good enough too, since I simply can’t go back to stock. I’m stepping down from 2.5" to 2.25" so hopefully this drones less than the outgoing 2.5" Enthuza exhaust. I figure I’ll keep the old exhaust and find a way to fix it once it’s off the car. Then I’ll use it when I turbo the car. Or maybe sell it. Or maybe I’ll get headers and then supercharge it....
But I digress. The REAL reason I’m posting this isn’t just because I bought some cheap ass exhaust, but to ask for advice on getting some bolts off. I am determined to do this installation myself. I have a couple of jacks and 4 jackstands, I know how to get my car in the air, and I can read directions and turn a wrench. But I know that the bolts between the cat and the exhaust are going to be rusted to hell and maybe seized completely.
I don’t have access to a torch, and hours of liquid wrench is the only tool I have in my arsenal so far. I have a dremel, but that’s nowhere close to the angle grinder I’d need to take on these bolts. Any tricks or suggestions?

Pb blaster is life. also if you have the means a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone works as a rust penetrate

You don’t need an angle grinder unless you let the wrench/socket slip and strip them. If they are properly siezed I usually turn them until they snap and install new hardware with some high temp anti-sieze (like the type used for o2 sensors) . You won’t regret it when it comes time to take it apart next time.

Anti-seize is like Frank’s RedHot. I put that shit on (almost) everything.

As someone who disassembles old rusted-ass motorcycles for a living, I can attest that the homebrew stuff is magic.
Just be careful. We thought we’d be clever and put it in a squirt can. It got through the seams.

When I bought my axleback it came with new hardware, so I gave the old bolts the five second rule. If I couldn’t get them to spin within five seconds they were going to get a visit from Mr Angle Grinder.
There were no survivors.

A dremel with a cuttoff wheel is about the most useful tool that I own.

I have cut rusted grade 5 bolts with a Dremel before. You can get a propane torch at your hardware store for like 30$. I also recommend pb blaster vs liquid wrench.

I know everyone says PB Blaster, but get Liquid Wrench !!! I’m a technician and have seen no rival for this stuff, including PB Blaster. I’ve seen co-workers work for hours on a nut, and as soon as I spray this stuff it comes right off. When I see rusty nuts, I spray this on first and it comes off like there was no rust at all.

Get those suckers red hot, then hit them with the impact wrench. Will spin right off.
